What is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise is a mission-driven business improving social objectives and serving the common good, which in our case is to combat violence and exploitation. It combines the best of traditional nonprofits and traditional businesses. A successful social enterprise balances upholding the social mission of its organization and maximizing the productivity of its business venture to ensure sustainability.
There are three main types of social enterprises: Give Back, Employment-Related, and Innovation. HTI Labs falls under the “Innovation” model, which consists of businesses developing effective solutions or products to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress.
Social enterprises can receive funding from grants and donations from foundations, corporations, governments, and/or individuals.
Why is HTI Labs setup as a social enterprise?
We’re a social enterprise because we seek to be able to eventually self-fund this work so it can be sustainable. And that means that we put our mission first while also needing to solve a market problem. What we’ve built (and are building) helps identify trafficking—and law enforcement, non-profits, & government aren’t the only entities needing to identify the problem.
